What kind of colleague can be the most helpful?
Organizations are filled with colleagues. They are everywhere! Yet not all colleagues are the same. Some are new to the organization, while others have been there for years, even decades. Some just show up to collect a paycheck, while others are deeply committed to the organizationâs vision and mission. Some ignore how the organization interacts with customers, while others are very observant of how the organization navigates the marketplace. Some colleagues are collegial; others are not.
To make progress in your organization, the kind of colleague you need to find is what I (and Nikki) call a âtenured colleagueââsomeone who ticks all of the following boxes:
Has at least three to five years of experience in your organization. Someone whoâs been on the job for at least three to five years will have experience and knowledge about who and what works well in your workplace, and who and what doesnât. Generally speaking, colleagues who have been at your organization for less than three years wonât have the same insight as those who have been around the block a few times.
